Summary:
Euler considers the following problem: Find, for a given divisor N, the smallest power of a number, a^{n}
that has its residue equal to 1. Or, more generally, find the smallest power a^{n} that leaves a given residue
r (Jeff Lagarias’ discrete logs problem).
According
to the records, it was presented to the St. Petersburg Academy on January 25, 1773.
