E850 -- Recherches sur la découverte des courants de la mer
(Research on the discovery of the currents of the sea)
Summary:
(based on Eric J. Aiton's introduction (written in English) to Opera Omnia Series 2, Volume 31)
In this unfinished essay on ocean currents, Euler outlines the methods by which ocean currents can be investigated:
- by comparing changes in the latitude and longitude measured at sea from astronomical observations with those estimated
by dead-reckoning; and
- by observations near land.
