Euler introduces the idea of resultant shear, and he derives the general differential equations
for a deformable line bent in its own plane. Together with
E481, Euler brings the elastica and catenary together in one conceptual framework.
According to the records, it was presented to the St. Petersburg Academy on January 14,
1771.
